Bringing the Border worlds right into your homes |
||
| Borderline is a series of five-minute audio drama documentaries set in the universe of Joss Whedon's Firefly, documenting life on some of the Border and Rim worlds through the years of the Unification War ... from an Alliance point of view |
Borderline is brought to you by Yoshida-Kendall Captures. Apparently. Well, actually, it's brought to you by the people who make The Signal and Dark Places - but don't tell the Alliance!
You can listen to the episodes individually, or subscribe to the series as a podcast
You can also create a smart feed with a custom delivery schedule (e.g. weekdays only) by going to Badger Books and clicking on Borderline's "Custom" button
Oh, and there's also a promo. You can find that here
I've spent the last two days living with the Calders, a typical farming family, in a typical farming community. This is an interview I had with John Calder. John has spent the last twenty five years of his life on the planet Shadow, the planet which only three days ago was described by the Prime Minister as, and I quote, "the heart of anti-Alliance misgivings". Here's what John had to say.

Four months ago, the Alliance began to enforce the declaration of Unification. Many of the Border and Rim worlds were happy to support Unification. Others, like Shadow, have declared open hostility toward the elected Parliament, with many of its young people volunteering to fight for independence. But most of the Border worlds are simply caught in the middle. How has the war affected them? We're here to find out.

There are many good reasons why the war for Unification is being fought. We talk glibly about bringing civilization to the barbaric outer worlds, without ever really stopping to consider what that means. In this report, I highlight one of the most compelling reasons for unification: the buying and selling, of human beings. Today, I talk with one woman, whose business I would really like to see shut down.

Silverhold has been in the news more than once, thanks to the abundance of precious metals below its surface. But while justly famous for its gold and silver mines, Silverhold is making news now for a far less romantic reason. Like Shadow, Silverhold has declared open hostility to the Alliance. For the first time, we'll be taking you behind enemy lines.

Today we take you to one of the outer worlds, but this one is far from barbaric. Despite being located in the so-called Burnham quadrant, on the edge of the Rim, Athens remains a staunchly pro-unification world. And yet, it is surrounded on all sides by worlds opposed to unification. We're here to find out how such a beacon of civilisation can continue to exist in such hostile surroundings.

Most of the planets in the 'verse support Unification. A few support the Indendents. Some, like Athens, occasionally change sides. Six months ago, Athens was captured by the enemy, stranding my crew there. Three months later, it was liberated by Alliance forces, and we were able to leave. But the planet of Jangyin is different again, for it has no alliegance at all. We're here to learn why.

The war has been raging now for well over three years. In that time, we've been to Alliance worlds, Independent worlds, unallied worlds, and worlds that change sides. But today, we take you to Angel, a world which is different again. Angel, situated almost at the center of the battlezone, is a microcosm of the war. What is life like, here? Let's find out.

Today we return to Shadow, and find it a far different world than the one we visited three years ago. The recent attack by Alliance forces has destroyed Shadow's Independent army completely, and the world has been left virtually uninhabitable. Incredibly, despite the assault, the Independent forces never surrendered here. The few survivors are now being evacuated to refugee camps around the 'verse. This is a humanitarian mission, and we're here to assist.

Refugees, thousands of them, left homeless by the bombardment of their home planets, are now fleeing here, to Ezra. Today, we visit one of the refugee camps. The dispossessed from both sides have come with nothing but the clothes on their back. The refugee program was put in place by the former governor of Ezra - but he's now dead, and the future of this world is far from certain.

After five years, the war is surely approaching its end, and for the first time, Borderline reports from a battle zone. I can't say I'm thrilled at the prospect, but we're here in Serenity Valley, where Alliance and Independent forces have just begun to fight. Hopefully, this will be a quick victory for our forces. Serenity Valley represents a key strategic position. Once it is taken, victory would seem inevitable.

The war is over. It ended a month ago, and celebrations show no sign of abating. The task ahead of us is to come together, winners and losers all, put our differences behind us, and move on. Soon, the new era of unification will take its first faltering steps. But not today. Today, we party. We're here on Paquin, to join in the celebrations.
